For service members, veterans with TRICARE and their families, the first question about treatment is often whether TRICARE will pay for it. The short answer is yes: TRICARE covers substance use disorder treatment, from detox to outpatient care. The details depend on the kind of care and your plan.
Nova Recovery Center is in network with TRICARE West, which covers Texas and Colorado. Here is what to know before you call.
Does TRICARE cover drug and alcohol rehab?
Yes. In a September 2026 explainer, TRICARE says it covers many kinds of substance use disorder care, including hospital stays, outpatient programs, detoxification and medication-based treatment. Your care plan depends on your needs, and your provider works with you to choose it.
TRICARE lists these covered services:
- Planned hospital care to treat mental health and substance use disorders. This needs pre-authorization first.
- Intensive outpatient programs (IOP), which offer care without a hospital stay for people who need more than regular outpatient visits.
- Detoxification, covered in several settings, including hospital stays, IOPs and opioid treatment programs.
- Medication-assisted treatment, which combines medication with therapy. TRICARE says stateside MAT does not need pre-authorization.
- Opioid treatment programs for people with an opioid use disorder.
- Therapy and related services, including talk therapy, testing and medication management.
TRICARE does not cover aversion therapy or unproven treatments.
Do I need pre-authorization?
It depends on the type of care. According to TRICARE:
- Emergency care does not need pre-authorization. In a crisis, call 911 and go to the nearest hospital.
- Planned hospital care needs pre-authorization before you are admitted.
- IOP may need it. TRICARE advises checking with your regional contractor.
- Stateside medication-assisted treatment does not.
Your plan type matters too. Referral and authorization rules can differ between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select, so check your own plan before you start.
Which TRICARE region covers Texas and Colorado?
Both are in the TRICARE West Region, managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Texas moved from the East Region to the West Region on January 1, 2025, along with Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, according to the TRICARE Newsroom.
If you live in Texas and have not looked at your TRICARE details since that change, your regional contractor is now TriWest. That is who you contact about network providers, referrals and authorizations.
Why does being in network matter?
Using a TRICARE network provider generally keeps your costs lower and makes authorizations simpler, because the provider works directly with the regional contractor. Nova Recovery Center is in network with TRICARE West.
Every plan and every level of care is different, so Nova’s admissions team will verify your TRICARE benefits for the specific program you are considering before you commit. You can start that online by verifying your insurance.
What treatment options does Nova offer?
Nova runs each step of the continuum, so you do not have to change providers at every stage:
- Medical detox, with 24-hour care while withdrawal is managed.
- Residential treatment, a 90-day program on Nova’s campus in Wimberley, outside Austin.
- Intensive outpatient (IOP), including programs in Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Colorado Springs, plus online IOP.
- Sober living, often alongside outpatient treatment.
Which of these TRICARE covers for you depends on your plan and on medical necessity, which is exactly what benefit verification answers.
