Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day. The World Federation for Mental Health, which founded the day in 1992, chose this year’s theme: “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.” It asks services to listen to the people who have lived through a mental health condition, and to let what they say shape the care that is offered.
For anyone who has struggled with drinking or drug use, that theme lands close to home. Substance use and mental health are rarely two separate stories. More often they are one story, told from two directions.
The numbers behind the day
The most recent federal survey shows how common these struggles are. According to SAMHSA’s 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health:
- 61.5 million adults, about 23.4%, had a mental illness in the past year.
- 48.4 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder.
- 86.6 million adults, a third of all adults, had one or the other.
- Among people who needed substance use treatment, only about 1 in 5 received it.
That last figure is the one worth sitting with. Most people who need help with substance use are not getting it, and many of them are also carrying depression, anxiety or trauma that nobody has asked about.
Why the two so often show up together
People rarely start drinking or using to create a problem. They start because something helps, at least at first. Alcohol takes the edge off anxiety. A pill quiets a memory that will not let go. A stimulant pushes back against the flatness of depression.
Over time the relief shrinks and the cost grows. Withdrawal brings its own anxiety and low mood, which feels like proof that the substance is needed. The mental health symptoms and the substance use start feeding each other, and it becomes hard to tell which one came first.
This is why treating only one side so often falls short. Stop the drinking without addressing the panic attacks underneath, and the panic attacks are still there on day thirty. Treat the depression while heavy drinking continues, and the medication and therapy have a lot working against them. When both conditions are present, care works best when it looks at both. You can read more about this in our overview of dual diagnosis: definition, signs and treatment.
What “real voices” means in treatment
This year’s theme is about listening, and good treatment starts there too.
At Nova, the admissions process begins with a confidential conversation about what is actually going on. When someone arrives for residential care, Nova’s nurses review their medical history, substance use history and mental health history. A staff psychiatrist evaluates them, and they meet with a licensed chemical dependency counselor. The point is to see the whole person, not just the substance.
Nova is mainly a drug and alcohol treatment center, and it also helps people working through major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder. When someone needs care that Nova cannot provide, the team helps them find the right resources elsewhere.
Lived experience is part of the program as well. In Nova’s residential inpatient rehab, clients take part in group work, 12-step meetings and daily check-ins, with support from staff who have been through recovery themselves. Therapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and trauma-informed care.
Small ways to mark the day
You do not need a program or a diagnosis to take part in World Mental Health Day. A few places to start:
- Ask, then listen. If someone you love has seemed off, ask how they are really doing, and let them answer without fixing it.
- Notice the pattern. If you reach for a drink or a pill to get through hard feelings, that is worth paying attention to. Our article on signs you might be self-medicating to deal with stress is a good place to begin.
- Say it out loud.Telling one person what you are carrying is often the hardest step, and the one that makes the next ones possible.
- Know where help is.In a mental health or suicidal crisis, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time of day.
When you are ready to talk
If substance use and your mental health have become tangled together, you do not have to sort out which came first before asking for help. That is part of what treatment is for.
Nova’s admissions team answers 24 hours a day, and the first conversation is free and confidential. If you want to know what your plan covers, you can verify your insurance in a few minutes.
Common Questions
What is the theme of World Mental Health Day 2026?
The World Federation for Mental Health chose "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change." It focuses on listening to people who have lived through mental health conditions and letting their experience shape services and policy.
Can you be treated for addiction and a mental health condition at the same time?
Yes. When both are present, care that addresses them together usually works better than treating one and waiting on the other. At Nova, the intake assessment includes a mental health history and a psychiatric evaluation alongside the substance use history.
Does Nova treat depression and anxiety?
Nova is mainly a drug and alcohol treatment center. It also helps people with major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD and bipolar disorder, and helps clients find other resources when they need care Nova does not provide.
What should I do in a mental health crisis?
Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
