What this assessment is

Prescription sedatives and tranquilizers work, and they carry a real risk of tolerance and dependence when they are taken long-term or without supervision. These questions are about which of those your use looks like.

The group is mainly benzodiazepines and barbiturates, central nervous system depressants prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, panic and seizures.

The questions are confidential and take a few minutes: how much you take and how often, whether you have needed more for the same effect, and whether you have tried to cut back. This is a starting point for reflection, not a medical diagnosis.

What they are
Central nervous system depressants
Main types
Benzodiazepines and barbiturates
Prescribed for
Anxiety, insomnia, panic, seizures
Risk rises with
Long-term or unsupervised use

Benzodiazepine withdrawal is genuinely unsafe to attempt alone. Call before you stop or taper by yourself.

Before you start

Do you take your sedative (for example a benzodiazepine such as Xanax or Valium, or a prescription sleep medicine) only as your doctor prescribed it?

If you take them exactly as prescribed, needing a higher dose or feeling withdrawal when you stop is expected, and is not counted as a sign of a problem.

Questions from the 11 DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorder, in NIAAA’s plain-language form. A screening, not a diagnosis. Your answers stay in your browser.

Understanding Sedative Addiction

Sedatives (including benzodiazepines like Xanax, Valium, and Ativan, as well as prescription sleep aids) are central nervous system depressants that can lead to physical dependence even when taken as prescribed. Withdrawal from sedatives can be medically dangerous and should always occur under professional supervision.

Our assessment process evaluates your unique situation, including:

  • Type and dosage of sedatives used
  • Duration of use and previous quit attempts
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions (anxiety, PTSD, depression)
  • Medical history and current health status
  • Support system and recovery goals

Based on your assessment, our clinical team will recommend the most appropriate level of care, whether that’s medically supervised detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient programming, or ongoing therapy and medication management.
